Hello,
Installed Boxee on my atv successfully, but I'm having trouble connecting via ssh.
When I enter the command in terminal I get:
Welcome to the AppleTV (via atv-usbcreator)
frontrow@appletv.local's password:
-but I can't enter the password. The cursor does not move and won't accept any keyboard inputs other than the return key, which yealds:
-bash-2.05b$
I'm new to terminal. What am I doing wrong?

(aTv 2.2, 24" iMac 10.5.5)

From my Macbook, I open a terminal window and type the following command:

ssh frontrow@appletv.local

I'm prompted for the password and I respond with frontrow. I'm now at the command prompt.

What SSH client are you using?

Ah...I'm a bit of a newbie. I need a SSH client on my mac? and if so what do you recommend?

also, you should know that the cursor will not move. this is the correct behavior...

so it may seem like it's not accepting input, and as a result, you might be typing in more or less the just:
frontrow

try just blindly tying in frontrow ...and hitting enter.

(i hope this makes sense)

hi 63worf

you are doing nothing wrong you are connected to the ATV ..the cursor will not be displayed when entering in the password..

what are you trying to do ?

thanks for the replies.

agentlame - I've tried typing in 'frontrow' then enter and I then get -bash-2.05b$
Is that what's supposed to happen?

Marcel- I'm trying to get boxee to find my media files, bit not having any luck. I'm following the other couple of threads on this and trying out the various suggestions, but all to no avail.

yep... no error=no problem.

at this point you would need to enter the command you would like.

if you can explain--in more detail--exactly what you would like to accomplish; i'd be more than happy to help you with the commands.

hi 63worf you are in safe hands with agentlame ...

Ok. I thought I had to enable ssh through terminal for boxee to be able to see my media files.
I have my aTv connected via cable to a time capsule. My movies are on my iMac wich is on the wireles network.
Boxee was working ok, but now won't access. After I log in I get an error message - Boxee exited with status 11

63worf: Mac OS X has a builtin SSH client for terminal emmulation. What you're doing is right.

You're currently logged in and can now issue commands.

Since you're using Mac OS X, check out Cyberduck at www.cyberduck.ch. This is a GUI SFTP client that will allow you to copy files to the Apple TV if you want.

Like everyone is asking, what do you want to do now that you've logged into the Apple TV?

Now I just get a black screen when I log in to boxee as a user- no response to anything. I have to unplug the atv to reset.

Hi iBog

It was probably a misconception on my part. I thought I had to somehow enable ssh from the terminal on my mac for boxee to be able to access the files on the mac. I'd tried the other suggestion posted on other threads on this forum, to no avail. From the replies I'm getting that does not seem to be the case. Sorry if I mislead anyone.

As I just posted, now I can't access boxee, although it was working fine few hours ago

i would start by deleting your boxee config.
1. ssh into the atv
2. rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/BOXEE
3. restart atv, then try boxee, again.

as for finding your media... could you tell me a bit about how you network is setup? where the media is stored, what type of computer, what os, how the files are shared (are you using smb?), what type of router?

thanks agentlame

I'll give that a try

In the meantime I have an atv 2.2 connected by cable to a Time capsule. My music is on the atv, but movies and tv shows I stream wirelessly from my iMac running 10.5.5.

I hope that helps

video > sources > network... do you see the imac?

Finally got it work again

No, can't see the imac

agentlame

do you have smb enabled for file sharing?

63worf
October 27th, 2008, 12:18 PM
do you have smb enabled for file sharing?

yes I do. I also have all the folders with media enabled for sharing.

For info, all my macs on the network are all accessible on the network from each of the computers (an iMac, Macbook, and Macbook Air)

agentlame
October 27th, 2008, 12:26 PM
are you able to see any of your other computers? with default smb, they should all show up under 'workgroup'.

63worf
October 27th, 2008, 12:30 PM
Should I have anything filled out under SMB Client/Default Username & password?

agentlame
October 27th, 2008, 12:32 PM
no... so long as your shares are set to 'read + write' for 'everyone'. (i don't have a mac near me to test this, but i'm relatively sure about this.)

63worf
October 27th, 2008, 12:40 PM
I've made sure that that's the settings for the shared folders. I can't see any of my computers

agentlame
October 27th, 2008, 01:06 PM
one last thing you could do is install boxee on the imac, and see if it can see the macbook.

also, could you post up your debug logs?

enter this command in the terminal:

scp frontrow@appletv.local:~/Library/Logs/boxee.log ~/Desktop/

that should copy the log to your desktop.

Hey, I really appreciate your help and patience. I'm very keen to get Boxee to work, as it's really what I've been looking for to make my atv what it should be.

the log is attached.

I did as you suggested and installed Boxee on my imac. I've managed to make it see the media on my firewire connected Drobo, but I can't connect to any of the other macs on my network.

I also tried to connect to my time capsule, and the only way to do that is if I connect the imac to the TC via smb via finder before launching Boxee. In that case the TC appears in video sources as a removable device. If I try to connect via boxee then it's not possible.

As for boxee on my aTv it does not even see the media that is stored there.

Is there anything special to set in the boxee network settings, or has anyone out there sucessfully connected their aTv via an airport extreme/TC, and if so how did you do that?

marcel
October 28th, 2008, 05:03 AM
hi 63worf

i have it working on extreme my settings for extreme are:

enabled file sharing checked and airport disk guest access:read and write

try to settings> media sources> network add manually just the IP .

63worf
October 28th, 2008, 06:21 AM
Thanks,

Just tried that - no joy

I've tried all combinations of entering IP, IP and password, adding as a source, adding manually and specifying the path to a specific file, and every time I get a messgage 'no files found at source'.

I have music and pictures on the aTv hd and these do not show up. Setting/Media Sources/Local Music shown 'not connected'

sounds stupid but have you tried reboot of ATV..

63worf
October 28th, 2008, 06:38 AM
In fact just before trying your suggestion, and numerous times before that.

marcel
October 28th, 2008, 06:43 AM
which version of ATV and boxee?

63worf
October 28th, 2008, 08:46 AM
ok - I have aTv 2.2 and boxee 0.9.3964/launcher 0.4

marcel
October 28th, 2008, 09:11 AM
what is the path to your local music and movies...

63worf
October 28th, 2008, 09:22 AM
There are no local movies as I stream those from the imac, but the music and pictures:
/users/frontrow/Music, and /Pictures.

63worf
October 28th, 2008, 09:25 AM
Also I've disconnected the ethernet aTv-TC and now on wireless and rebooted aTv. Still the same.

marcel
October 28th, 2008, 09:28 AM
can you ping your appletv from your imac ..to get the appletv ip go to settings>General

63worf
October 28th, 2008, 09:38 AM
Yes, no problem with that

marcel
October 28th, 2008, 09:47 AM
if you go to settings >media sources>local sources and then add frontrow/Music select the name "frontrow music"

then go to the main Menu>Music>sources find "frontrow music" ..

63worf
October 28th, 2008, 09:56 AM
Did that, and I get - Loading Error , Failed to retrieve data

marcel
October 28th, 2008, 10:15 AM
are you sure there is content there ..what are your permissions for boxee frontrow/frontrow?

63worf
October 28th, 2008, 10:30 AM
Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean. I thought boxee would access the data on the aTv hard drive, and that was in frontrow. This is only of academic interset to me, as all my music is already available from the aTv. What I'm really interested in is streaming my video content from my imac to boxee, so I don't have to convert everything I download, and even eventually rip my dvd collection to my drobo and be able to play back in DS5.1 or DTS.

As an aside I've managed to make boxee on my imac see other sources on the network by simply adding the source manually and entering the IP as you suggested earlier, then I'm able to select the path on the source later to specify a folder for movies etc. (that's before Boxee crashes on the mac, but that's another story). I can't work out why I can't get that to work on the aTv, doing exatly the same thing. Very frustrating, but I apprciate the help I'm getting from you guys!

can you see your appletv via your imac..also check out this thread http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=1015

63worf
October 28th, 2008, 10:45 AM
thank, just checked out the thread, but as I said it's not a big concern to me if I don't have the stuff that's already on the aTv

In reply to your question, I can see the atv from the mac in various ways - it's connected via itunes, I can access it via ssh (you guys showed me how before), and I can ping it. Also all the media on my itunes on the imac is available streaming on the atv.

marcel
October 28th, 2008, 10:57 AM
can you send me or pm a screen shots of your sharing screen and option screen

63worf
October 29th, 2008, 04:18 PM
just a quick word of thanks to all the team at boxee, especially marcel. Behind the scenes a lot of pm'ing and great support and I've finally got Boxee on the atv to find my drobo on my imac. Now watching a tv show streaming from my mac. How cool! I can't wait to see what's next for boxee! Thanks guys.

I removed the file sharing permissions from my mac, then reset them, making sure that in the options on the file sharing preferences pane - smb share is selected and user account is checked. Then I restarted the mac and made sure itunes was connected to the atv. In Boxee Settings/Media Sources/Network Souces I added a new source using IP/user/password info for my mac and presto - all the files and drives on my mac were available, including the drobo.

Boxee has found and organised all my videos. It's working well, although large video files (over about 2Gb) stutter, but I suspect that is a function of the streaming speed and not boxee.

Good luck!

Thanks 63worf, your instructions in #48. It actually freaking worked. I can now see my mac and connected hard drives.
I tried for many hours, reading many sites watching how-to videos, I'm sure it all help some but your tip unlocked all my previous efforts.
