This software is truly awesome. Even for alpha it's stable, relatively fast, and mostly bug free. It's totally usable already.
It makes my AppleTV something more than Apple has promised. Apple promised a lot but by charging a significant amount for content, and by not allowing me to use my own content easily, it's become a paperweight. Sure, I rent a movie maybe once every couple months, but that's it.
Boxee makes the AppleTV much more than the sum of its Apple parts. I love Hulu. The concept of exchanging ads for free TV makes sense (hey, that's how I grew up, way before cable). I will gladly sit through ads to watch my favorite shows and movies. The same goes for other content providers.
Where they fail, however, is that it has been limited to my computer, which sucks. Why would I want to watch TV on my computer? In a web page?
Boxee has finally freed me of all those chains. My AppleTV sees actual use. Playback ain't to shabby. And I can watch all those nice streaming sites on my TV, where they belong.
Thanks to the XBMC team and the Boxee team. I am excited to see where this will go. I see a bright future given the capabilities and the social aspect. Imagine an inexpensive Linux set top box (since AppleTV is technically a hack). Perhaps Roku will re-think their Netflix box and make a Boxee capable version someday. Perhaps Netflix will rethink their limitations and work with Boxee.
So thanks. Thanks for doing something that should have been done by the big boys a long time ago!
