i have it running on appletv 2.0.2, not sure if it works on 1.x but its certainly worth trying...
For manual install without atvusb-creator patchstick:
download the launcher from:
http://atv-xbmc-launcher.googlecode.com/files/XBMCLauncher-0.5-debug.tar.gz
unzip and copy contents to /Users/frontrow on appletv
ssh in and type:
sudo sh XBMCLauncher-0.5-debug.run
This should add XBMC/Boxee to appletv menu.
In appletv menu go to XBMC/Boxee -> Updates. Update both Boxee and XBMC.
XBMC and Boxee should now work (hopefully)
Good luck.

Right now, only AppleTVs with Take 2 (any 2.x) versions are supported. It's a XBMC/Boxee Launcher issue that has to deal with differences in the class structure of the plugin architecture. While it is possible to create an AppleTV plugin that supports both 1.x and 2.x versions, it's much. much more difficult.
Aside from AFP which does not seem possible under 2.x with the current hack methods, personally I don't see any reason to stay with 1.x and not update to the 2.x AppleTV OS version.

That would be my question. What reason would anyone have to not update the Apple TV to 2.xx?

ATVFiles. Even Nito is not yet fully working with 2.2 but it is usable for basic things.
I had to think twice before updating because XBMC is not yet perfect. Once updated you are stuck to XBMC/Boxee and the semi-working Nito.

As much as I really want to try Boxee, it is going to take some work to get my Apple TV 1.1. upgradet to 2.2, rehacked and working with NitoTV and Sapphire (software I use everyday). And by all accounts Nito TV and Sapphire do not work as well on 2.2 compared to 1.1. In fact I don't think Sapphire works on 2.2 at all yet.

Hey, I just love boxee but I love my ATV 1.1.
I have managed them to work concurrently.
I installed boxee on my desktop, and then just copied that file to my ATV.
I then created a plist and open it with the Application launcher plug-in.

Yes, that will work. As I've said above, Launcher will NOT work. Boxee however will run and under r1.x you can use that plugin to launch Boxee.

I'm running atv 1.1. Have just downgraded from 2.3, to have Mythfrontend working. Launching boxee (0.9.8.4880) from 1.1 compatible AppLauncher (using it to run MythFE), results in a blank screen.
Log complains about lacking XBMC_HOME variable. If I fire Boxee from command line, after exporting XBM_HOME=/Applications/Boxee.app/Contens/Resources/Boxee , I get the initial screen, where a new account is supposed to be added. The remote however doesn't work. (works with MythFE).
Suggestions?

I'm curious as I've seen reports of others using r2.1/r2.2 with Mythfrontend.
ATV OS r2.3 need the IR handler updated to reflect the changes in IR handling but r2.1/r2.2 should be fine with respect to Mythfrontend.
r2.1 update is still posted and you can use osupdate to version up/down as long as you have the update dmg.

No go for me. I could watch live tv, but recordings didn't work. Bumped my head against the wall for week or so,with various builds, before giving up.
Now, any way to have boxee running on 1.1?

Sorry, on you own with respect to that :) Boxee itself should be fine, it's 10.4 compatible. I suspect the biggest issue will be IR. Boxee uses the same EventClient model as XBMC with respect to IR. Under 2.x, Launcher is sending IR info using two methods, a) Launcher 0.9 is internal, b) Launcher 2.3 uses XBMCHelper. The source for XBMCHelper is in the googlecode project svn. If IR is not working, then you will need to figure out the IR cookies or r1.1 and add them. There's settings in place but I not sure if they are correct as I spend very little time doing anything with r1.x.
