Justin.tv is now available on Boxee!
http://www.imgilbert.com/repository/justin-image-1.07.png
FEATURES:
View full screen, high quality live broadcasts from Justin.tv
(In resolutions up to 720p, depending on the channel being viewed.)
Browse channels using beautiful live thumbnail images that will update every 5 minutes while browsing. The channel inspector shows a larger preview of the video, current channel status, and the number of current viewers.
Filter channels by ANY Category and Subcategory offered on the Justin.tv website.
Want to see only Movies? or Hockey? No problem!
All categories are sorted from highest to lowest popularity.
Filter channels by broadcast language, too. No sneaking into a channel only to figure out it's in Spanish (or Japanese).
Justin.tv App remembers the category you were browsing the last time it was launched.
This reduces the time to reach your favorite channels.
Justin.tv App can display your favorite channels. Simply "Log In" with your Justin.tv username and the new Favorites Category will appear. This Category will show all of your favorite channels from the Justin.tv website. You must create a profile and add your favorite channels on the Justin.tv site to use this feature. At the moment I haven't devised a good way to favorite channels in Boxee, because the player controls cannot be customized at the moment.
Uses the Justin.tv API that was recently released.
This means the app will withstand HTML layout changes, etc.
App loads "screens" of thumbnails at a time to reduce load times.
The channel list will automatically expand as you navigate to the end of the list.
Navigate by scrolling through the channel list, or use the page up/page down buttons to move one screen at a time.
Mouse users can also navigate using the scrollbar control.
App has been tested and verified working on the AppleTV, Mac, Ubuntu, and Windows versions of Boxee.
CAVEAT LIST:
Sometimes an ad will pop up at and obsure the bottom of the screen. If you wait a few minutes, it will disappear. These ads are encoded into the stream and cannot be removed to my knowledge.
Some of the 720p channels really chug on the AppleTV.
Update: The Justin.tv App is now available in the official Boxee repository. Thanks for everybody's hard work testing the initial release of my first app!
Please report back any problems you find with the app.
This is my big thank you to the boxee community for keeping me cable free for the past year!
Version 1.08 of the Justin.tv app has been released.
Improved the way the app handles embedded unicode characters in the channel status field.
The app can now display pound signs in the channel status field.
Removed the crcmod library which is no longer used as of version 1.07.
This is now "official" Boxee app for Justin.tv!
Big thanks go out to the guys at Boxee and Justin.tv,
and to everybody here for the great feedback and ideas.

Is there anyway to get to full screen mode, some of the streams seem to be 160x80 pixels! ;)

Sorry about that-- I forgot that some people may be using a mouse instead of the stupid apple remote!
I have released version 1.01 of my app to the repository that corrects mouse control for the menus; it also refines the menus a bit for remote users too.
You may need to delete the current version of the Justin.tv app from the app box and reinstall to get the new version. I've updated the version information in the repository xml and all the descriptors so it should update automatically.

I've been using it on my AppleTV all night, watching the Lord of the Rings in almost-HD. As I mentioned in the original post, some of the streams on Justin.tv seem to have compatibility issues with Boxee. By the time the flash stream is loading, my code isn't doing any of the work at all, so this is just a general Boxee compatibility issue. My app merely provides the Boxee software with the url of the flash stream...

Update: Version 1.02 of the Justin.tv App has been released.
This build corrects a bug in the thumbnail hashing process that was causing any thumbnails starting with "0" to fail the updating process. This was affecting roughly 6% of the thumbnails.
Also new to this version are "More" and "Back" buttons which improve App usability when using the mouse. These buttons are of limited use when browsing with a Remote control (and are essentially disabled), but can serve as an indication that you have loaded all the available channels in the current category. (See the updated image above.)
Clicking the "right" button while viewing categories now loads the selected category, and selects the subcategory menu. This will ease navigation. Reselecting the active category selection will no longer reload the channels listing.
The "Viewers" listing near the large preview image was too small for me to read from my TV. I have increased the size of the field and darkened the background to improve contrast.

Update: Version 1.03 of the Justin.tv App has been released.
The main channel interface now sports a scrollbar control, and the appearing/disappearing buttons have been jettisoned for permanent ones. The scrollbar control can only be used with the mouse because the scrollbar control is extremely limited when navigating with the remote. Mouse navigation should no longer seem like an add-on hack from now on.
Clicking the up and down buttons next to the scrollbar will advance the channel list by an entire screen, instead of a single row. If you are at the bottom of the channel list, additional channels can be loaded by paging down. The page up/page down buttons are available using either remote or mouse interface. Pressing 'up' or 'down' on these buttons will also scroll the channel list and seemed to be a natural fit with the remote.
Cleaned up the focus/unfocus animations to make the user interface much cleaner and more fluid. You'll find the interface won't "blink" as much now, particularly when you are using the mouse.
The channel list is now disabled when using the drop down menus. You'll no longer see different channels coming into/out of focus while mousing over the drop down menu.
Fixed one bug which could occur when using the mouse with the drop down menus, where a mismatch between the menu item displayed and the one actually selected could occur.
Performed a general clean up of the user interface, improving the visual appeal of the background and several of the controls.

That is very strange, considering I have just verified that all version strings in the xml/repository settings have been changed to 1.03. It almost sounds like old versions of the xml files are being cached by Boxee or by your internet provider-- and are pointing to the 1.02 version of the App, which is no longer available my server. (I only keep the most recent version up for download.)
I have re-updated both my AppleTV and my Mac with 1.03 from the repository to ensure the repository working correctly. All I can do at this point is ask you to retry it later, and maybe try deleting the repository/app before re-adding them to the app box.

Update: Version 1.04 of the Justin.tv App has been released.
The language menu has been updated to remove the rendering errors when trying to print languages with unicode characters. As the list controls in Boxee (and XBMC) can not support unicode label strings, the languages have been encoded using the Latin-1 encoding. Hindi, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese (Taiwan) unicode strings have been replaced with their English equivalents.
The channel detail section on the right side of the screen has been updated to match the recent user interface changes. The "Now Playing" field has been enlarged so that the entire channel status string can be viewed.

also a quick possible bug: after you play a channel it shows up in your recently played videos on the home page. however, you cannot play them by selecting them from recently played. you only get a "read more" button and no "play" button. not a big deal at all, but thought it might help to mention it.

Unfortunately, there is a limitation of boxee at the moment that prevents the volume controls from working on Flash content. See here. (http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=4025)

I've looked into this behavior, and it stems from the way that Justin.tv obscures the location of their flash player on their website. All the addresses for the full screen flash player look like "http://www.justin.tv/#channelname#/popout" where Justin.tv's server hides the actual filename of the flash player. Because of the weird naming convention, Boxee's history reader won't accept it as a valid address, and then prevents the user from playing the file. I will attempt to talk with the Boxee folks to see if the offending function FileItem::IsVideo() can be modified in a future Boxee release to make an exception for Justin.tv URLs.

Update: Version 1.05 of the Justin.tv App has been released.
Apparently Apple's archive utility automatically generates an unwanted "__MACOSX" directory which has been installing into the /UserData/apps directory without my knowledge. This does no harm to Boxee, but is annoying. My app is now being packaged without this directory.
The "Media Action" dialog that pops up when you tell a channel to play has been enhanced. It now shows an image of the channel thumbnail and the channel description, which is a heck of a lot more interesting than "TV."

Have previous versions of the app been working on Ubuntu? I didn't know anybody had even tried it...
As of this afternoon, my app has been placed in Boxee's official repository-- it's possible that Boxee is getting confused by the same app being listed in two separate locations. I'll try removing it from my repository so you can see if that solves the problem. I'll still keep my repository around for an upcoming app that will make a lot of people very happy...

Edit: You haven't had Boxee running for a while have you? AFAIK, Boxee only updates the data in the App Box after it is restarted, so it may have been pointing to the outdated version which is no longer on my server...

Oh no, that didn't come out quite like I meant it to. I meant, that if you had the Boxee app open and running for a long time (like say 24 hours), the App Box only has the repository data from the last time you started Boxee, 24 hours ago. I think the App Box only updates its data when Boxee launches. (In order to see my repository changes, I usually have to quit Boxee and relaunch it.) It might be a good idea to quit Boxee and relaunch it to make sure you have the latest repository data.
By the way, from what I've seen, we don't get updates in the App Box on the Mac/AppleTV side either. I also have to delete and reload every new version.

yep... tried relaunching a few times last night... it's all irrelevant, though. was able to reload Justin.tv tonight with no problem. must have been repository weirdness last night. i'm getting 2 entries for it on the app box, but that must be because the app is listed in 2 repositories now.

I just launched the app on my AppleTV and it loaded fine-- so there doesn't seem to be a problem with Justin's website that is causing it. I suppose you might try doing that-- I haven't made any changes yet to the app since moving it to the official repository, so it should be identical to the version you have installed.
One thing I've seen during the beta testing of my Adult Swim app is that Boxee itself can throw up "Unable to Load" errors if you are drilling down through the app menu too fast-- such as Apps > All > App Name. Whenever I make a change to the Python source I have to quit and restart Boxee for it to "see" the changes so I have been stopping and restarting my apps a lot. :)

hmm... the only one i watch regularly that has a password is http://www.justin.tv/pittsburghsportsonline (steeler's games) and they're not as-of-this-moment password protected (it's a feature the mods can turn on and off). if you "friend" and "favorite" the channel with your justin.tv login, you'll start getting bulletins from them. the passwords to the broadcasts are in the bulletins. the guy who runs that channel is pretty cool and super dedicated. if you'd like i can pm him and see if he'll work with you to get passwording working on your app.
now that i think of it, the password option might not be worth adding as a feature right away. IMHO, i think that a search function and the ability to type in a channel's name (like "pittsburghsportsonline" for the channel above) would be more useful to more people.
then later you might want to add the social networking stuff like logins, bulletins and passwords.
pm me if you think i can help further.

And this is where our ideas of app design diverge. From my perspective, I don't want users to have to type in ANYTHING on a regular basis on Boxee. Have you tried typing in things using a remote control? (Not the iPod remote.) It is seriously aggravating and nearly painful to do. If I had to do it on a regular basis I would chuck Boxee. I have an implementation that I'll be releasing tonight which offloads most of the typing work to a web browser, which is most humane way I could think of implementing it.

Version 1.06 of the Justin.tv app has been released.
Added a new feature: Favorites. Simply "Log In" with your Justin.tv username and the new Favorites Category will appear. This Category will show all of your favorite channels from the Justin.tv website. You must create a username and add your favorite channels using a web browser to use this feature. At the moment I haven't devised a good way to favorite channels in Boxee, because the player controls cannot be customized at the moment.
You no longer have to "double click" to start a stream, as in click the stream, and then click the "Play" button. The stream will start to load on the first click. Also, as soon as you escape or back out of a stream, it will automatically stop streaming. I hate having to shuffle through the menus just to stop the player when I'm through watching.
Added the capability to play a stream from the "Recently Used" menu on the login screen. This turned out to be possible by modifying the content type variable which had been previously ignored.
Added Sports subcategories for "Action Sports", "Climbing", "College Sports", and "American Football".
Reworked several of the graphics to improve the consistency of the visual appearance, and improved the visibility of the scrollbar when viewed from a television screen.
Internally, the app no longer needs a separate library for generating thumbnail tbn CRCs.

Great app, much better than the RSS feed option I was using in the past. but......I have a few requests
I was showing my wife, mother, and sisters how great Boxxe was and the justinTV app you made last week and they all thought it was "really cool", until they realized they couldn't start the movies or shows from the beginning. :(
So I thought about it and realized if you hit the watch later button(not using boxee but using a browser), copied and pasted the url in the address bar and changed the time stamp back to a previous time you could catch the beginning or any part you missed of that broadcast. Since you made this great app and I know nothing about programing is there a way you could make the navigation buttons (play, rewind, etc.) change the timestamps of the channel and then rewind 1min, 10min, and fast forward 1min, 10min as well as pause/play the broadcast?
Again I don't know anything about programing so it is probably a lot more difficult to do than it sounds. but that would be pretty cool to have.
Also I noticed that some of the channels don't load. I think it has to do with the 'are you 18 or older' button on the way to the channel. Any way to by-pass or acknowledge?
Thanks again for a great app

agreed! using the on-screen keyboard is less than ideal (actually, i mostly use a wireless keyboard for that type of stuff). your solution with favorites is very clever... i was simply frustrated that i knew a channel existed by searching for it in a browser, but couldn't find it via the app. the favorites feature fixes that!
this might be my favorite app on boxee. i definitely watch it the most. thanks so much!

Since you made this great app and I know nothing about programing is there a way you could make the navigation buttons (play, rewind, etc.) change the timestamps of the channel and then rewind 1min, 10min, and fast forward 1min, 10min as well as pause/play the broadcast?
The ability to time shift video on Justin.tv was added within the last couple of weeks, and I've been too busy with my two apps to know this sort of thing was even possible. In any case, implementing it will require a lot of work. I'm not sure if this sort of thing is even supported in the API yet. In any case, don't expect to see this sort of feature for quite a while. It is a very good idea, I just need to see how technically feasible it is.
Again I don't know anything about programing so it is probably a lot more difficult to do than it sounds. but that would be pretty cool to have.
Also I noticed that some of the channels don't load. I think it has to do with the 'are you 18 or older' button on the way to the channel.
That's actually a really good call-- I think you might be right about this. There are some channels that won't play on the Apple TV due to the really high quality of the video source (just kills the 1 GHz Celeron) and I had assumed that all of the channels which didn't load were caused by the lack of processing power. However, looking into it more closely, I do see a correlation between videos that do not load and the ones with the mature warning.
There is no way to bypass this directly through Boxee, but I think I have figured out a way around it. Assuming you are logged in to the Justin.tv server with an adult user account (they ask your birthdate), this message will not appear in your web browser.
In order to allow true logging in, I need to give my App the ability to authenticate with the Justin.tv servers. In v1.06, even through you supply a username, you don't need to supply a password because you don't actually have to log in to get a user's favorites. I am meaning to add it in the next big release of my app, but this feature might be important enough to get done ASAP.

The 1.06 update has been delayed for various reasons, so it might be a while until it shows up. (It will probably show up as 1.07, or 1.10 when it does.)
This will make more sense in a week or two.
For now, I will work on getting authentication up and running-- I have to wait on a few changes that are being made to the Justin.tv API.
You might check out my Adult Swim app while you are waiting for the next release. I haven't gotten a lot of feedback on it, but it is already one of my favorite apps.

Here's some news on the newest developments with the Justin.tv app-- this should make quite a few people happy:
• I've added full authentication with the Justin.tv server. Most of the work here was in reworking the flash player code to allow cookie data to be passed along with the http:// request. Eventually this will allow me to add more features besides displaying a user's favorite channels.
• The flash player work has had another added benefit-- it allows me to send a cookie telling Justin.tv that it is safe to view mature content. This cookie is now sent regardless of whether you are logged in or not, so those people who don't need accounts don't have to go get them to view all the channels.
• Refined a few of the graphics and animations to make the interface much smoother.
I'm still waiting for some important changes on the Justin.tv server side that need to be included in the next version. So the wait continues...

A huge thank you to ikeg!!! Many cool apps for boxee on atv but this one really totally awesomely blew up with the score mark!
If it was not for the low resolution some "channels" show, this would be way better than cable!
Let's hope Justin tv itself doesn't follow the capitalism path of other streamers and avoid the advertising every 5 minutes or so.
Again thanks, now I must say that atv serves it righteous purpose!
>>> Unfortunately 1.06 still not showing on the repository :( but hey! real happy to be able to watch PORTUGUESE channels as well as football (soccer for some of you) on almost real time. Thanks again

Version 1.07 of the Justin.tv app has been released.
Per the request of the Justin.tv folks, I've added a new Category -- "Featured".
This is the default category that is shown when you run the app for the first time.
On subsequent runs, the app will display the last category viewed (as it does currently).
Added a new feature: Favorites. Simply "Log In" with your Justin.tv username and the new Favorites Category will appear. This Category will show all of your favorite channels from the Justin.tv website. You must create a profile and add your favorite channels on the Justin.tv site to use this feature. At the moment I haven't devised a good way to favorite channels in Boxee, because the player controls cannot be customized at the moment.
Added all missing subcategory designations, including "American Football".
Reworked several of the graphics to improve the consistency of the visual appearance, and improved the visibility of the scrollbar when viewed from a television screen. Improved many of the fading animations to improve the visual appearance of the app.
The flash player in my app has been reworked to allow the sending of cookies when it requests a channel stream.
This allows the app to send a cookie telling Justin.tv that it is safe to view mature content, allowing users to view mature channels.
The cookie is sent regardless of whether you are logged in or not, so people don't need to have accounts to view all the channels.
Internally, the app no longer needs a separate library for generating thumbnail tbn CRCs.

This is my first post here.
I just made the account so I can ask IKE if this application should be working on boxee for windows, I have boxee and it has been working good on windows 7 for sometime now.
I have used different versions of your justin.tv app, however everytime I load it I get the same a blank "frame" of what seems to be justin.tv.
All other apps seem to work, even the justin.tv feeds work also. it's just the app.
I can see justin.tv from the navigator just fine. :)
this is a screenshot of what I get.

Nvidia Graphics card latest drivers
Soundblaster Live latest drivers.

That is one crazy screen shot. As samcraig said, my app has been working fine for most Windows users, there are probably hundreds of people using it at this point. This screen shot is a symptom of the behavior, but probably not the cause.
Could you capture a debug log for me and post it somewhere that I can look at it? I might have a better idea of what's going on if I can see what's going on in your system. I don't know if this is Windows 7 related, or something specific with your system.
Here's some instructions on how to capture a debug log:

mmm
I did an small analysis of the file, maybe the way I installed boxee, that I think I did it without admin perms, and I run it without admin perms affected it.
I think the problem is on this line:
1151:
22:34:45 T:4328 M:1539252224 DEBUG: unable to load C:\Users\chuby\AppData\Roaming\BOXEE\userdata\apps \justin-tv\language\english\strings.xml: Failed to open file at line 0
I think that if it fails to open the strings.xml then It can't fill the text, ( I think )
I will re-install with full administrative priviledges to see if the behavior changes.
then I'll repost.

ok yes it was a permissions issue, I re-installed it with Administrative perms and the justin.tv app works for the first time

Sounds like your Boxee install might be broken-- since a bunch of apps are no longer working-- this doesn't appear to be specific to my app. You should get in touch with one of the Boxee folks in one of the help threads.
If I were you though, I'd try reinstalling Boxee, or in the worst case, restoring the AppleTV and then re-installing fresh from a patchstick.

Version 1.08 of the Justin.tv app has been released.
Improved the way the app handles embedded unicode characters in the channel status field.
The app can now display pound signs in the channel status field.
Removed the crcmod library which is no longer used as of version 1.07.
This release fixes some problems users have been having when displaying channels in the Entertainment/Movies categories. Nothing too exciting.

Thank you for making this program. It is my favorite app on Boxee.
I have version 1.08 installed on my ATV and there are times when I get this annoying Flash ad for "Silk" soy milk. Sometimes when I go into a channel the ad appears for 30-45 seconds and then disappears. I assume this is how it is supposed to work? But, other times the ad appears and never goes away. It just says on the screen for the whole time I'm watching. I see a small "x" in the upper right corner of the ad but, I'm using the Apple remote so I can't navigate to click it. I have been successful in getting the ad to go away by exiting the channel, then coming back to it again (sometime 3 or 4 times). But, eventually, with enough channel starts and stops, the ad goes away. I wanted to report this in case anyone else is having the same problem.
Other than this minor glitch, I really love the app! :)
I also have a suggestion but, I don't know if it is possible:
It would be nice if the program could remember the channel that was previously highlighted when returning to the main channel listing. Sometimes, while channel surfing, I enter a channel watch for a few minutes then exit. It takes me a few seconds to figure out where I left off because the order of the main list changes.

That actually isn't a bad idea. Wouldn't be a lot of work to implement either.

The thumbnails on the Justin.tv webpage are only updated about every 3 minutes-- at least that is what I found out when I was originally writing the app. It was tucked away in some javascript code somewhere. At the time, I wasn't actually "legal," so I decided that 5 minute intervals were probably fine to use, especially since the thumbnails I was using were substantially larger than the website thumbnails. Those thumbnails should still be updating every 5 minutes or so.
If you want to force a refresh, you can actually go up to the subcategory menu, press enter to open the list, and press enter again to reselect the same category. This forces a refresh of the channel listings, although the thumbnails are still on the "5 minute rule."
I've been debating about how to add in the new animated gif feature that was added a couple of weeks ago. I will probably use the animation in the selected panel item, but what about the large inspector window? Would you prefer the animation over the clarity of the higher resolution thumbnails?
I'll probably start work on some of these things next week. Right now I am kludging together my own fix for the CBS app, which broke over the weekend. Besides Comedy Central, it's the been the only Boxee-supplied app that I've actually been using. (RIP Hulu.)

I would prefer the animation over clarity of high-rez thumbs. Sometimes it's hard to tell what's on by looking at a single still image. But, with more frames it might give us a clue what's playing.
Thanks for all your effort on this app. I appreciate all the work you've done.

Today, while using the Justin.tv app on my ATV, I ran into another ad that wouldn't go away. It was different from the Silk ad I mentioned before. I tried my trick of exiting the channel and coming back (like 10 times) and it didn't help.
It seems that there are some ads which go away after 30 seconds. Others have an "X" in the corner that you need to click to get them to close. I don't know how it could be made to work with the Apple remote. Using the directional keys just brings up messages about "seek" and "volume". The play button brings up the Boxee controls. I can't think of a way (other than connecting a mouse to my ATV) to click the "X" to close the ads. :(
Has anyone else run into this problem?

I'm having the same issue. Using the Sofa Remote app (Mac) to control Boxee, I'm able to use a virtual mouse to navigate over to the "X", but when I do, the Boxee control panel pops up. Sometimes it covers the "X", making it inaccessible, but even when the "X" remains visible (on larger ads), it doesn't respond to clicking it.
Any ideas?

I have the same problem. Sometimes the ads do not go away, and they may cover almost half of the screen. Usually going back to the list and reloading the channel solves the problem for me, but not all the times (I also have tried up to 10 times!)
AFAIK, you cannot interact with the Boxee's browser, so you are not able to click on the X at all. I have no idea if this will change. I have a related issue with Fancast, where at times I am not able to remove browser messages (e.g., when fancast complains my computer is too slow).
Cheers!

I'ved used Justin.tv a few times for MNF. It's a bit of a pain to find a good feed, but when one does show up it's decent.
My issue has to do with staying connected with the feed. More often than not, it stops working after a few minutes. At the same time Justin rearranges the feeds on the page and I end up losing track of which feed was the good one.
I've heard there's a web page based app that's used to refresh maintain the connection, but don't know that it would work with boxee.

Justin.tv doesn't work for me in Boxee. Is it because of the Flash 10.1 beta i'm using? I need it for my Revo 1600.
If that is the case, that really does suck and hopefully Justin.tv is working on updating their players to be Flash 10.1 compatible.

Can you do a quick update of your app re the thumbnail animation.
I looked into your code and saw that your pulling the thumbs from "screen_cap_url_large" of the stream list.
I know the animated gifs aren't in the stream list but can't you do some string ops in your python code to get the url for the animated gifs.
What I noticed is "screen_cap_url_large" generally contains "hxxp://static-cdn.justin.tv/previews/live_user_[channel_url]-{SIZE}.jpg".
The animated gif is located at "hxxp://static-cdn.justin.tv/previews/live_user_[channel_url]_animated.gif".
It would be nice to see a short preview of the selected channel.

TIA
It's not that easy - Boxee's support of animated GIFs is extremely poor at best.
Boxee's thumbnail generator will not accept GIF files-- simply replacing the current thumbnail URL with the animated GIF URL will result in blank thumbnails. There is a convoluted way around this, by programmatically downloading and refreshing the thumbnails outside of Boxee.
Before trying that, I wanted to see if Justin.tv's animated GIFs would even display in Boxee. Boxee's documentation states that many animated GIFs don't work in Boxee, so it was important to make sure first.
I downloaded a sample animated GIF from Justin.tv and stored it locally inside my application (simple method to bypass the first problem). I then tried to display it in an image control, like I would any other image. Every time I tried to load my application with the GIF image displayed, Boxee would crash.
So no animated GIFs in the Justin.tv app until Boxee improves its animated GIF support. (Alternatively, if the animated GIFs were improved or Justin.tv provided multiple preview frames it might be possible.)
Thanks,
Ike

How do you show the chat room.Iam sorry without a chat room option this app is pointless.Half the fun of justintv is the chat room.
This is an app for displaying Justin.tv on your television using a simple remote control. You can't even view the video in full screen while displaying the chat on the actual website. If you want to chat, hook your web browser up to your TV, or keep your web browser open while you're watching video on your TV. But don't expect the app to ever support this.

I have the newest Boxee beta build, Windows 7 and Flash 10.1
Justin.tv doesn't work for me in Boxee. Is it because of the Flash 10.1 beta i'm using? I need it for my Revo 1600.
If that is the case, that really does suck and hopefully Justin.tv is working on updating their players to be Flash 10.1 compatible.
Yep, Justin.tv doesn't support Flash 10.1. On some systems, it displays an error screen telling you it isn't supported. On the Mac, you get audio but no video at all.
My guess is they'll support Flash 10.1 after it actually ships, although I don't have any information either way.

No, it works fine in the beta. The only restriction is that it doesn't support Flash 10.1 beta 2, which is installed separately from Boxee. I was streaming video for several hours last weekend with no issues.
There were some mentions of issues running the Ubuntu version of the Beta, but as far as I know these have not been reproduced by the Boxee devs. I don't have a Ubuntu box to verify this.
So as long as you're not running Flash 10.1 (or the Ubuntu version?) you should have no problems.

I'm actually a Mac guy! I've got a MacBook and an AppleTV that I use to run Boxee, and so far I haven't seen this error despite streaming for hours and hours on Justin.tv. When is this error occurring, it is at the very beginning of the stream or sometime in the middle? Hi again iKeg,
Apologies for the misunderstanding, I am also on Mac OS as well Apple TV, and I used to watch Justin TV Loads, since the day you came up with the app (thank you again for such magic) however a few days from now, when I open the application (via Boxee ATV only, because no problem on mac safari, ATV firefox or any of the PC's here at home)I get that error STRAIGHT AWAY, won't load anything, just shows that error message cannot connect and the OK button. I am in Macau, China, I don't get any other problem with other channels (apps I mean). I don't believe Justin TV is geoblocked anyway. What do you think this may be?
I am running the latest Boxee version and Justin TV app version 1.09
Thanks in advance.

Thank you very much for all the suggestions posted concerning my JustinTV issue. I restored from factory my ATV and applied the latest Patchstick, re-installing everything from scratch. Finally managed to get the fantastic Boxee to run 100% and all flash loads correctly.
Most likely some code I copied went wrong and some files or permissions got corrupted.
The process took me less than an hour and went flawless. I have my entertainment system fully operative again.
Thank you again to all moderators and members of this very active forum who tolerated my humble ignorance and learning curve :)

is it possible that we can have an option for this to work with only "LIVE" favorites instead of just favorites?
the problem is so many channels get deleted or a list of offline videos takes a long time to see the videos actually online
so if we could see "ONLINE" or "LIVE" favorites as well

Actually, that's a great idea, and one that isn't hard to implement using their API. I'm actually going to make that the default choice, so you'll only see the favorites that are currently live. It doesn't make much sense to do it otherwise. I'm currently working on an update to the app to fix some new glitches that have cropped up from the beta, expect to see it in the next release.

I love the Justin.tv app, but I am having one small problem. When viewing any video, the bottom 40 or so pixels is cut off. It's usually not a problem, but sometimes it cuts off subtitles and info. No other boxee videos have this problem, and the Justin.tv apps UI takes up the whole screen, but when I start a justin stream, the bottom 40 or so rows are gone. It even cuts off the advertising at the bottom. I haven't seen anyone else with this problem, so I wanted to let you know it was happening.
I am running boxee 0.9.21.11487 and whatever version justin.tv app comes with that. Windows XP SP3 connected to a 720P HDTV via HDMI (It occurs through VGA hookup as well.)

Hi everybody!
Justin.tv app is IMHO one of the most valueble Boxee apps - tons of interesting live content and some is in very good quality! I enjoy the app a lot, it is _very_ usefull, actually it is probably the primary reason why I'm using Boxee.
Unfortunately, I see a couple of non-critical but annoying issues with the app.
1) Channel thumbnails scrolling isn't smooth, it is page-based (probably to speed up the thumbnail loading process), once the end of the page is reached and "Down" button on control is pressed next page starts loading. This is not a problem in itself, problem is that after next page is loaded the selection (focus, cursor - how should I call it?) jumps back to the first page. Now I need to scroll back to the second page - this time it'll be smooth because it is already loaded. After going to the third page selection will once again go back to the first page and now I'll need to scroll two pages of thumbnails in order to get to the point where I left etc. This happens each time each subsequent page is first loaded and it is _EXTREMELY_ annoying, especially if the list is long. I strongly believe that after switching to the next page selection should be positioned in the first row of this next page, exactly below its position in a row on the previous page.
2) Thumbnails refreshes are very infrequent (hours?), usually they don't correspond at all to the current channel content. It _looks_ like they are refreshing each time page is loaded (it freezes for a couple of seconds, shows the loading screen) but thumbnails are not changing. May be Boxee caches them somehow, something changed in the last versions? I'm using the latest beta.
Also a couple of feature requests: search (it is a pain to type with a remote, still it is a very usefull feature sometimes) and managing of favorite channels.

I agree with Rulo that is is a good app. It will become a great app once scrolling is fixed and the black bar at the bottom is removed. I do appreciate the fact that the app is free.

Didn't know about this until Brian filed a bug report with JIRA.
The Justin.tv guys embedded some HTML inside their JSON listings that was
freaking out a library I use for parsing/handling HTML characters inside the
channel names and descriptions. I've re-jiggered the algorithm so that won't
happen again.
I've been out of the loop with Boxee for months now, I've been directing my
attentions towards other projects (a large project at work, and my new house).
I don't really use Boxee much anymore, since it got too bloated to run on my AppleTV. That and I had to waste weeks of time convincing Boxee that there were issues with their Ubuntu releases that were breaking my apps.
I suppose it'll be out in a couple of days, or whenever Boxee decides to post it. This app won't become abandonware on my account, at least.
Thanks,
Ike
P.S. Don't ask me about what's going on with the Boxee Box, whether the app will be there, or whatever. I haven't heard anything from anybody at Justin.tv or Boxee about the app since it went official, and you're probably more in the loop about this stuff than I am.

Sorry, but my app basically parses out channel information and builds the urls where the flash video popouts are located (like clicking the popout link on any justin.tv channel page). It sends the url to Boxee's flash player, which handles all the video/audio decoding, and upscaling the video to the screen. So any kind of performance issue with the video is because of Boxee's flash player-- something I can't fix.

Well, when I designed the app, that was before they disabled the popout linking-- there was no problem using those urls in a web browser.
For whatever reason, it seems that the built in Gecko browser passes/ignores the following redirect code embedded in the popout page:
<script type="text/javascript">
if (top != self) top.location.href = "/channelname";
</script>
While the new Webkit based browser used in the Boxee Box fails the test and forces the redirect.
At one point, I had toyed with the idea of using the embed code to generate an HTML file that I could pass to the browser, but seeing as how there were no real gains over just directing the flash player to the popup pages, I didn't bother looking into it.

Justin.tv is not available on the boxee box by default.
One can port it over from computer boxee directory to a custom repository. Delete the <maxversion>0.9.29</maxversion> from the descriptor since boxee box version is over 1.0. Now accessible to the boxee box.
Works fine except it no longer opens the stream full window. Just manually mouse over to fullscreen box (not the popout). Attempting to code a full window script as ikeg suggested in an earlier post.

edited: Feel free to access justin.tv that was ported over to a custom repo - dir.streamfree.tv . Disregard the other apps as they are newbie projects.
(seriously if anyone feels there may be copyright issues with the port/hack .. note it here and I will delete it)

How did you get the App to show up on the Boxee Box? The App is not on it to add to your favorite Apps....Would love to know how you got it to show up:cool:
***Just saw your repo link for it! Thanks for doing that for us!!!!***

 Other than the pop out page - what is not working? Watching a hockey game right now with the app on Boxee Box.
I am running boxee on a computer not the box.
On the computer several weeks ago the app stopped working. A week or so ago the app was updated but now the sound works but the image only refreshes every several seconds. There is plenty of bandwidth and this is only in the Justin app.
I was trying trying the boxee app as a way to see if I would go with the Apple TV or Boxee TV.
The way everyone passes the buck Apple TV is looking like the path to go. It may be limited compared to Boxee but if it is on it, it works.

I think he was posting that towards me....I would look at getting the Boxee Box before AppleTV...I have played with it at my friends and it is pretty much a cool Netflix player and good for your iTunes music...that's pretty much it....The Boxee Box will have Netflix, Hulu+ and do the same as AppleTV but so much more! Have you used the Navi-X App yet? If no, then check it out! It is one of my favorite Apps!

Justin.tv is not available on the boxee box by default.
One can port it over from computer boxee directory to a custom repository. Delete the <maxversion>0.9.29</maxversion> from the descriptor since boxee box version is over 1.0. Now accessible to the boxee box.
Works fine except it no longer opens the stream full window, but you just mouse over to fullscreen box (not the popout) and do it manually. Trying to code a full window script as ikeg suggested in an earlier post.
That's after I get my hottestgirlsoncampus.com app working. Priorities :)
---
edited: Feel free to access justin.tv that was ported over to a custom repo - dir.streamfree.tv . The other apps are my newbie projects.
(seriously if anyone feels there may be copyright issues with the port/hack .. note it here and I will delete it)
---
Nice work! Your custom edition of Justin.TV does indeed work on the Boxee Box.
I filed a JIRA bug report (APP 403) for the Justin.TV developer so that the Max Version Number tweak can be added to the official app.

The thing to remember is that most apps, Jusitn TV included, use Flash to render video.
So, if you have laggy video performance with Flash it comes down to three things: 1-OS used, 2-Hardware (CPU and GPU) and 3- Installed Flash 10.1 Add-in for FireFox.
Any one of those three not properly addressed and you will experience this effect, "but the image only refreshes every several seconds."
Lastly, not all flash players and videos are the same. Some can play better or worse than others on any machine....add in less than optimal hardware and it's magnified further.
Can't always blame the app or boxee. It's more complicated than that.
I just used the Justin TV app on my crappy XP box (which has oooold 1 core CPU, no GPU acceleration of flash and is nearly the worst system to use Boxee under) and it played and functioned fine. The video lagged a little, but that's normal for low power CPU, XP and no gpu acceleration. Though, the app worked flawlessly on my Win-7 64 Acer Revo 3610 machine, which has the proper OS and meets the minimum hardware spec for boxee.
See my First STop link in my sig. I've got all the hardware and flash info needed to sort out playback.

Has there been any progress on being able to log into password protected streams?
Right now, when trying to access a password protected stream, the "player" interface starts up around an html rendering of the login page and it won't let you select the password text box or type at all.
If you still need a stream to test this out on, I won't be using mine for a while but I've set up a password for you to do whatever you need to.
Stream: www.justin.tv/kinglewi
Password: test
I know that I don't always have to log on so maybe there's a cookie that will bypass it. Thanks for your hard work on this app.

any reason why justin.tv looks really awfull in boxee? It seems instead of using the fullscreen controls it try's to stretch the windowed version and it just looks really bad on my 21.5 inch 1080p 16x9 monitor, It also makes the video go off center. is there a way we can make it just go fullscreen the normal way? It don't look bad if i browse justin.tv in firefox or any other browser, I think a lot of apps are like that, For instance the pbs app. It makes justin.tv basically unusable in boxee so I'm forced to use my web browser and get up every time i want to watch another channel, Is there any fix for this?

My justin.tv app on boxee is only showing 60% of the screen after I upgraded my pc from winXp to win7 x64. Everything else (mkv, rmvb, youtube.. etc) works after a few tweaks but I can't seem to get justin.tv to work properly. It now streams much smoother than it was on winXP but does not show the full screen.
I think it might be a flash player (10.1.102.64) related issue? but I don't really know where to start as everything else flash related seems to work fine.
Has anyone else experienced similar issue?
ps. Justin.tv works in Chrome.

Thank you for the quick reply's. I found the LiveTV App after I posted last night and not only is it a good work around, but a much better experience in my opinion. Justin.tv is great, but their app makes it a bit cumbersome to browse.
Well done!

I have been using the Play later link from my browser, it adds the Justin video to the boxee que. It works faster and streams more smoothly, I'm running outdated hardware on this particular unit. Justin stream really well from within the web site itself, but through the boxee app I get alot of Jitter. By using the play later link, the video shows up in my boxee playlist, home page, and I play from there. Interestingly i don't get the ad playing either.
Only issue is the links that get dmca'd, then you need to find their new link, but hey, that's always an issue.
Later,
ben.

that's interesting, topcat.
So your suggestion is await email notification from broadcaster, use boxee browser, click 'play later', and the channel spools into the queue. I will try. quite the workaround, but hacks are why we are here.

I have been using Boxee software on a HTPC for a while now and have been loving the software. Really like the apps and Justin.tv is probable the best and because of that i decided to get a Boxee Box by D-Link for another room but cant seem to find the Justin.tv app?
Is the Justin.tv app available for the Boxee Box or is it an app that only works on PC's?

A good justin tv app would be nice, maybe have a list of the people we follow and their videos.
Also for some reason trying to watch justin.tv vids in the browser is just not working, after about 10-15 mins it always stops the video as if it has reached the end.

This Justin.tv app I was recommend above is that great. Shouldn't it show video in full screen? (like my PC Justin.tv app)
Also it seems to be more choppy like it was on a slow Internet connection?( tested same channel on PC app and streams perfectly)

It's not just the Justin.TV app. I get this problem a lot with youtube as well. Ustream, etc. It's a browser issue.

Actually it's a flash issue (althea94). He is using the ATV 1st Gen. The browser does not play video in thge DIY version. He is using the justin app. The bb is a combo off issues inc browser and flash compatability. Justin has had its share of issues.
Again what flash ver do have? You can run the URL in my sig. I have 10.3 running well. You will have to sftp in and update that way.
