Hi all --

I am a complete noob to the whole boxee hacking my ATV world. I completed the ATV hack last night following http://blog.edwards-research.com/2009/02/hacking-apple-tv-23-from-windows-vista/, a little out of date but a perfect guide for noobs :)

OK so now comes my questions:

1- Do I need Boxxee installed on my desktop also for it work with my ATV?

2- Can boxee or XBMC stream my AVI's from my desktop(vista) to the ATV?

Thanks

Shadek

1. No you do not need to have Boxee installed on your PC inorder to stream ..but we do work with windows ...

2. Check out this thread to stream media http://support.boxee.tv/forums/49598/entries/42503

Thanks for the Link !!!!

Ok so here is my problem ---

I am able to see my workgroup "BUDDY" It then asked my for a account/PW which i have not set up on the ATV or the PC. So i just click confirm, it that scans and comes with "No files found at source"

I have a single folder on my desktop shared out to everyone with full rights. And no firewall turned on besides my wireless router.

any ideas or suggestions would be great.

The workgroup default is "WORKGROUP" on the ATV (Settings >Network>smbclient)..can you view the file via Browse option?

ok now when i browse I can see the "basic Windows" user Dir with music, movie, picture. but when i go to the movie dir on the atv in boxee the folder is empy (only have an up arrow) I checked the folder on my pc and I have 1 avi file in the movie folder.

any ideas?

Oh i am also able to see the dir when going to setting media source -- WRGRP>BUDDY>"same dir as above....

I was also able to set up a upnp connection in XBMC and was able to stream the video file. But who wants to have to us window media player ... UGH :(

I'm somewhat of a noob to the ATV-Vista thing, but in reading your thread, I had the same problem with ATV wanting a username and password to access my computer running vista premium, or any of the external drives I had connected to my vista computer.

After vista had downloaded all the updates, I went to the sharing control panel- there are a bunch of options, and I set everything to share all media across my personal network, and also turned OFF password protected sharing - this is apparently the default setting for vista. After I restarted, all the folders I was sharing showed up for ATV.

hope this helps- let me know how it goes. I didn't mess with using windows media player, or using xbmc.
