View Full Version : Application Ideas/Requests
DPK
July 11th, 2009, 06:56 PM
In an effort to help out some people that want some ideas on "the next best app" to develop, I've made this thread. If you have an idea for an app, post it here and I'll add it to the list.
Basically this makes it easier for people who want to make an app, but would like to make one people would actually use. If you have a detailed request, go ahead and spell it all out and I'll link to your specific topic/thread/whatever. Be creative! There's a sliding scale in terms of developer skill sets. Some devs are just starting out with Boxee, others have been here a while and like challenges.

These have all already been suggested on GetSatisfaction, but here they are again anyway:
For UK Boxee users, these would be really great.
We already have the BBC iPlayer, but the other big UK TV channels also have their own online players.
ITV Player (http://www.itv.com/ITVPlayer/)
4 on Demand (http://www.channel4.com/programmes/4od)
Demand Five (http://demand.five.tv/Home.aspx)
Also, we don’t have Netflix in the UK. Our movie rental service is LoveFilm, who also have an on-demand online viewing service (currently in beta).

hey if there are any Aussies here, or any dedicated music fans for the matter, it'd be great to see a Triple J application.
They provide so much content online (live audio stream, on demand audio streams, direct downloads, audio & video podcasts...) a well written app taking advantage of all of these would be awesome.

anyone think its a possibility?

They've been mentioned in other (multiple) threads, but I think that Crackle.com and FEARnet would be huge.
In addition, ThatGuyWithTheGlasses.com would also be great.

Here are some more that I would like
NasaTV - Both live streaming of whatever Nasa Broadcasts, and a section of past videos. (http://playlist.yahoo.com/makeplaylist.dll?id=1369080&segment=149773) I think this would be cool. Looks "easy" to make as well!
WebMD - Has useful health tips. Don't know how easy/hard it would be to make though.
CNN/FOXNEWS - Basically any kind of LIVE streaming news service would be nice. Fox news I believe broadcasts live online.

We already have access to TED talks, it would be awesome to see other lectures/content from:
The ResearchChannel - http://www.researchchannel.org/prog/
SeedMagazine - http://seedmagazine.com/
ForaTV - http://fora.tv/
Wired
Would like to thak you guys for making the OpenCourseware content accesible and boxee in general, its made my life much easier with regards to learning and massively improved my accesibility to all my local video/audio lectures.
P.S. the research channel is an awesome resource for scientists/engineers and gevelopers and has over 3,500 titles.

the fancast plugin shouldnt be that hard... they have an rss with all the shows already:
http://fb1.fancast.com/rss/video-index.xml
that links to the individual shows rss:
example: http://fb1.fancast.com/rss/41417.xml
the actual xml for each episode contains plenty of extra goodies like episode number, season, thumbnail, ect

also the show xml contains all shows vs hulus that I think is limited to about 20 episodes.
only problem I see so far is some shows don't appear to be in the video-index.xml... might be worth just emailing them and saying your using google reader or something and your favorite show isn't in the xml :)

Glad you like BBC Live, just finishing up a few problems. Got to fix Linux first, some hardware has decided to play up with it now so it never stays on more then a few minutess when i startup.
When thats fixed i need to add a few thumbnails to BBC Live and then ill see if there's any new apps i could make. Ill have a look at the Nat Geo website see how they link to videos etc..

Now that MythTV is working again in Boxee, I would love to see a cleaner interface for the Boxee/MythTV powerhouse.
Lots of people reference Mythbox (http://code.google.com/p/mythbox/) as the standard to meet. If there could be a way to harness their scripting to get XMC+Myth to work together, but make it have the clean Boxee feel, that would be perfect.

We recently canceled our cable in favor of Boxee+torrents, and it's been GREAT!
However, I'm a huge NASCAR fan and I'm starting to feel the sting of not being able to watch the races on tv. I do subscribe to NASCAR.com's Raceview (a video game looking display with cars) that shows me the race and gives me the radio broadcast. I would be great to be able to access that through Boxee, but that's not what I'm requesting.
NASCAR.com also has a video section where I usually watch clips of the race, post race interviews and such the day after the race. I was wondering if it was possible to get a app to watch these videos in Boxee? Here is a link to the website where the videos are.
Thanks.

What about an app that would allow users to enter a url of a specific video (flash) streaming urls? Sites like tikilive.com, channelsurfing.net, freetube, blinkotv, and others have channels that open up in a window with a separate url. For example: http://www.channelsurfing.net/watch-fox-news.html .
Live Channels like CNN, Fox business channel, nfl network, espn, are available at these sites.

Just wanted to share.....................
Apparently YouTube is going to be offering rented movies through their site within a couple of months. At the moment they are trialling the service with just google employee's. Now if boxee could create an app for this to work asap that would be a major plus for boxee's future.
I am going to guess they would want you to pay for the movies with Google checkout.

Working on an RSS feed app for it right now for you. I have added it to my repository (see my sig.) I am still working on getting it all added to the RSS feed tho. So far I have Physics, algebra and arithmetic. I am adding the others as fast as possible. But go ahead and try it out.

ESPN360 would be huge for myself and several others. Sports is what is holding back my buddies from following my lead of cutting cable.
ESPN360 has a twitter account (twitter.com/espn360) that tweets as shows begin. If your ISP (ATT, Comcast, etc) carries ESPN360 then the Tinyurl from the tweet pops a video window right up and you're set.
This is easily converted to an RSS feed through Twitter. Is it possible to parse out the Tinyurl in each tweet's RSS feed and load that URL into Boxee's player? I'm not intimately familiar with Yahoo Pipes but i suspect that since every tweet has the same format ending with a predictable Tinyurl that it is possible to grab just the link.
While i have near zero programming skills it seems like a rough program would be pretty easy to do. I believe that the Hulu Feeds App operates in a similar way of using RSS to list videos and then opening a browser window and isolating the video from the window. A similar approach could be done here.
This would be huge! Thanks.

Actually, yeah, this won't be that bad too do. I'll work on getting a python app for this made, baring any unforeseen things that I'm not coming across right now just browsing around the 360 interface.
The only issue I see is that the player requires an install of a 3rd-party app to make it work. So I'm guessing this limits 360 to just Windows and Mac users.

First let me say you guys are doing great!
Here's a request which I think will help convert more people to boxee.
Lala.com
Lala.com allows you to upload all of your iTunes library and then stream that library anywhere on the internet.
Bonus features include the ability of adding songs to your online library (only) for only 5cents, albums are about 99c.
Thanks

Hi,
That might be a big task but I think it would be great to have a full-featured web browser with a user interface that is suitable for TV/remote control.
Having that would finally keep me in Boxee at all times, while now I still use the underlying OS for browsing.

I use the Justin.tv app all the time and a LIvestream app would be a great addition. Especially with a site like po opdic ktv.org that shows a lot of classic 90's shows through LIvestream.

I would second (50th or whatever) for a Lala.com app. I know that it may be risky as we don't yet know what Apple is going to do with Lala but it would be great to be able use it with Boxee until it changes. We might get 1 year from it.
Anyway, I would love to have Lala through my Boxee. :D:)

I've been using a MEdia Server called Play On to do much of what Boxy does, just through my PS3. however, i've really fallen in love with Boxee and its possibilities, and there's one function I was really hoping someone could replicate. PlayOn uses a Scripts engine to add additional features, similar to Boxee's Addons. I know Boxees addons are written in Python, which I have no knowledge of, or i'd try this myself. One of the Play On scripts, Written in Lua, gives access to every single Bleach episode currently available. The videos are pulled from "http://www.bleachget.com" but how i dont really know. there's also a "http://narutoget.com/".
Is there any way someone could create Boxee Addons to pull the videos?
Edit:
I went through the lua script and it's not using an RSS.. I can't really figure out how it's pulling the videos. it's just pulling the webpage with the videos listed on them

My requests would only really affect australian users of boxee, but in addition to triple J, how about things such as the abc's online streaming eg iview, or the australian version of some of the apps that already exists eg an australian version of the syfy app for scifi australia? I would love to be able to do it myself, but have no idea how to make boxee apps. Will have a look after christmas

I second or thousandth the request for more sports.
ESPN360 is a great start and I know I read it is on it's way, but channelsurfing.net offers a ton of sports from multiple leagues including a ton of international.
Please, please please allow me to cut the cord.
Oh, and anymore movies online for the misses. I have tried a ton of apps but besides movies I already have, I don't know what apps to use to watch movies. Internet Archives doesn't count and I am using my Netflix app. If anyone could PM me with movie answer I'd appreciate it.
I haven't touched Python since I install my chip in the orginal XBOX but I will eventual try and port an old EasyNews video app over. Is there a place to get started for that?

I don't know how hard it would be to do, but maybe someone could up the ability of the facebook app to be able to see the news feed? I don't know if that would be possible.
I also was wondering what the update on the ESPN360 app is?
I second the wikipedia idea and suggest an IMDB app as well.
Thanks for the great work so far.

Dear developers,
Since D-Link is planning to release the Boxee Box in Sweden, there is a feature that I would like to have added to the software.
This is the scenario:
You start the Boxee browser and enter a URL. (f ex http://www.playrapport.se). Next time you start Boxee browser, you will see the adress (playrapport.se) in the history. To the right of the displayed history URL's, there should be a button with the text "Create shortcut".
This creates an URL-shortcut as "App" look-a-like and puts it in your "My Apps" view.
This will give the unit much higher value for the every day person. Easy access is the key to the market.

It must be possible to configure each app with multiple proxyes with fallback.
So we can finally watch hulu in the uk too :)

Hi guys,
Basically all Aussie channels now have catchup sites, would be great if they could be intergrated:
ABC: ABC iView (http://www.abc.net.au/iview/)
SBS: SBS Video Player (http://www.sbs.com.au/)
7: 7PLUS (http://au.tv.yahoo.com/plus7/)
9: FixPlay (http://fixplay.ninemsn.com.au/)
TEN: TEN (http://ten.com.au/watch-tv-episodes-online.htm)

Add rdio (http://www.rdio.com) to the list.
rdio recently launched in the US and Canada.
It's a nice alternative to Spotify which isn't available this side of the pond yet!
Here's another vote for the Rdio streaming music service --I like it a lot more than Rhapsody. It's got a very clean, classy, uptown-looking, easy to use UI. Would meld well with Boxee's look and feel, and it offers a ton of value for money. Also, if Apple fields a streaming music service (which seems inevitable and imminent), Rdio would endow Boxee with a powerful alternative.

Does Boxee support Logo channel's online media? They offer full episodes of some of their popular shows. http://www.logotv.com
It would be nice to have either an app or just have it connect to the TV Show category.

My request / idea:
A cool tablet or smartphone app to control boxee (box) for browsing, selection or starting MP3s in the music shares. For example like Sonos ZP 90 and Sonos iPhone/iPad app or another example Squeezebox Touch and the iPhone/iPad app 'iPeng'.
Why? To select music wihout starting the TV.
Boxee box could become an alternativ to the above-mentioned expensiv solutions for MP3/music (Sonos, Squeezebox).

Public lectures from the 'best of the best' people in theoretical physics
http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/en/Outreach/Public_Lectures/View_Past_Public_Lectures/
Think TED for physics, the institute is currently headed by Stephen Hawkings and features lectures from Roger Penrose, Leonard Susskind and many others in the field.
Wold be very cool to access these via boxee.
Cheers
It seems this may be possible with their sister site http://pirsa.org/ you can subscribe to feeds for different lecture series. Unfortunatly it only links to the mp3 files. ... I will continue to look in to this.

I'd like to see both Rhapsody and Napster supported. Both would ensure that the Boxee Box would have a clear edge on Google TV which is currently partnered with Napster. Also the ability to browse and control your music (local, Pandora, Rhapsody, and Napster) from your Iphone/Ipod just like Sonos would make the Boxee Box even more epic! I hope you read this, and better yet, implement it! I am glad to help with whatever, for free!

I travel alot and I would like to be able to control Boxee from my laptop on the road. I know what you are thinking, just install the software, yea but I have a bunch of movies that I am planning on putting on a external HD hooked up to the Boxee, and I would like to watch them when I am on the road. I am not sure if that would be possible becasue of bandwith issues or maybe the it would take to long to buffer but it was just a thought.

I don't know if any of these have been suggested, but here we go...
ESOcast (This has an HD RSS feed, so it should be easy.)
NHK World TV/Radio Japan (live TV and radio feeds)
Deutsche Welle (live TV and 4x radio feeds)
AmericaFree.TV (at least a dozen live TV feeds)
ZDF (has one or two live TV feeds- One is news)
NOS Journaal (2 live TV feeds, several VOD bulletins)
CCTV (Most of China's national TV service's ~20 channels have live feeds)
RAI (at least 1 live TV, 6 radio feeds)
RTE (One live TV feed- RTE News Now- and about a dozen live radio feeds)
More, if I can think of them-- Live worldwide TV on the Boxee Box, that's the way I wanna go! :)

Three more to add to the above wishlist:
RNW.nl (at least one live TV feed, at least 6 live audio feeds) (I used to listen to RNW on shortwave radio as a kid, back in the '70s...)
South Korea's KBS and MBC both have live 24-hour news TV feeds. (They also have live radio feeds-- KBS has a couple live feeds of their shortwave radio station, KBS World, music and news.)
(All the ones mentioned, except RNW.nl, I've watched on my iPod touch, but I tire of craning my neck to the right when it's on its speaker base- And my neck tires of it, too. :) So I look forward to watching all the above channels through the Boxee Box on the HDTV. :) )

A few weeks ago I was watching an episode of the Linux Action Show (http://www.jupiterbroadcasting.com/?p=3421) hosted over at Jupiter Broadcasting. In there episode they review the BoxeeBox.
Anyways, they bring up an idea of creating an emulator app for Boxee. I highly doubt anyone has started this but I'm sure it would be cool with the remote. Obviously, it won't be an N64 type emulator, but rather something simple would be neat such as the NES or ATARI. Or even something way simpler like the Chip-8, just a starting off point.
I am not sure how DLink + Boxee would respond with this, because I'm not entirely sure on the legality of ROMS and Emulators.
But its just an idea for the Python nerds in this community. (If only Java was ported, smh)

Boxee Box has just been launched wider in Sweden trough a number of distributors.
The lack of possibility to see specially svtplay.se is a big disadvantage for all new Swedish users. Some Swedish channels can be seen in the browser with very good result, but not the biggest public service channel svtplay

Not sure if it has been mentioned yet, but I would love to see a Dreambox app.
The app should hold all or most options offered in the dreambox interface, easy to navigate or at least able to zap, stream, and have an epg reader record timer.

Given that BOXEE supports UPnP, why not use it for accessing a PC running the Rhapsody client?
The PC can have the UPnP server running and Boxee can access it and play the songs just like the DSM320 operates.
Tried that and managed to access my Rhapsody library but could not play the songs.
Any idea how to get the songs to play?

I could see it being part of the app library OSD (where install/start/shortcut) appear. Alternatively... a web visible "app/extension" storefront/repository/library type thing do display all these bits and/or collect feedback that remains tied to that app? Idea occurred due to wishing to route feedback to the "AP News" app developer and not knowing where to put it? No obvious app thread.

Maybe a way to browse local air channels in the US? All of the channels here broadcast in HD (Texas). For me it would be cool to be able to browse the local channels even if I had to hook up a HD antenna.
Maybe a interface that shows the channels you can tune to and just be able to click em like the other channels already listed.

The NFL recently adjusted their restrictions on NFL Gamepass - allowing it to be purchased/used in Canada! I've confirmed this with an e-mail to their support desk. I'm really excited!
Since they've also transitioned to Flash 10.1, one would think this would run awesome on the Boxee Box!
https://gamepass.nfl.com/nflgp/secure/registerform

if someone could make an app that grabs either an aspx file or uses some popular streaming music from the web (shoutcast style) and pulls that meta data (song/artist) to display some art rather than just showing equalizer stuff. would be cool too see photo slideshow type stuff like the last.fm app does on the xbox. i just want an easy to launch app that gives me music and interesting hi rez tv output that doesn't require me to maintain playlists, get new music, etc. currently my solution is to just put an aspx file in my quick launch and live with the equalizer as it plays.

Pitchfork still doesn't have an iPhone/iPad or Android app, so creating the Pitchfork.tv app would be a big win for Boxee!

Norwegian national tv station (www.NRK.no) put most of their content on the web page in windows media player and silverlight formats. Neither work on Boxee Box. However someone has made a script that exposes all the media files in standard RSS. The RSS's are available here: http://www.frankburmo.com/nrk/rss/
They can be added one by one to Boxee Box's RSS feeds and works just fine. But if someone could put together an app with category navigation and direct play that would be great for all Norwegian users.

I have started a pool about this idea. Not only a pool but started to make it http://apppedia.fiasco.fm
I think we are in lack of having more info about applications in just one place. Where you can find applications, repositories and developers. And get a status of each (still working, updates, rating, version, platform.)
If you want to find out more please take a look on this thread I started: http://forums.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=36190

I'm pretty decided to start developing something towards what Flipboard is for iPad. Something like Bartsidee TV framework but I would like to offer less decisions for the user when he is using it... more like zapping!!
I started to layout some screens and even thought in prototyping it (I'm a motion graphics designer and terrible programmer... give me a break!!!)

Sounds interesting.
I'm a big fan of Flipboard and Zite on the iPad.

I'm sure a lot of Boxee users
already know about these ones,
but I'll post them again.....
I think they'd make great applications!
- The Tom Green Channel
Tom Green's website
would make a great Boxee application!
He turned his whole living-room
into an Internet TV Studio.....
and he's had some very cool
guests on his live broadcasts!
check it out:
http://tomgreen.com/live-stream
- Ukulele Videos -
This website teaches you how to play the ukulele.
You can learn everything from the very basics,
to the more challenging ways of playing!
This would be a very cool application
for anyone interested in the ukulele!
Here it is:
http://www.ukulelevids.com
- FUN-TUBE TV -
Cartoons, Cult-Shows and B-Movies!
LOOK:
http://funtubetv.angelfire.com/index.html
- Stage-Vu
Here is a great video and film website
that would make a great application!
Lots of good things to watch on here:
http://stagevu.com/videos/Films_and_Movies (http://stagevu.com/videos/Films_and_Movies)
- The U.K Wild Life Channel
A wildlife channel that broadcast out of the U.K:
http://www.wildlifechannel.tv/
- MEGA-VIDEO
This one is a must !!!
So many great things to watch on here:

I guess this is the right place to put this - I have a few suggestions for Boxee's Escapist App:
1) After watching a video on a channel, the list of videos snaps back to the beginning.
For example, if I'm watching one of Yahtzee's first Zero Punctuation videos, (PsychoNauts, for instance) after the video ends, the list of videos snaps right back to the beginning. If I want to go back towards the beginning I have to scroll through the entire list of 160+ videos. Can the lists of videos please be made to *not* snap back to the beginning after a video is watched?
2) Publisher Club support
The Escapist offers members the ability to sign up for their "Publisher's Club" paid membership, which grants a number of perks, including no advertisements during videos and high-quality videos. Can this be integrated into the Boxee app?
Thanks very much!

if Boxee had an opposite, it would be the Sony Location free player. LF is Watching tv on your computer rather than watching your computer on tv.
The weakness of the location free is the requirement to use the LF software as a stand alone app. However, if I could access my Sony Location free device from Boxee....I could watch anthing!
App developers. Please let me know if this is in the relm of possible
Fantastic!

With Keith Olbermann returning to Current TV, it's time to bring back the Current TV app for Boxee.

Shahid.net (http://shahid.mbc.net/) is sort of the Hulu of arabic shows in the middle east. It would be nice to see a Boxee application for it.

I'm looking for an app that will give me news from CTV, CBC, Global and any other Canadian News source. I'm not an app developer. But here I sit watching news on a crappy little laptop because Boxee does not have an app for that.

I would love to have a Disney Channel, Disney XD, Nick, and Nick Jr. apps.
Netflix is working for most of that for now but I would prefer the apps.

I believe Nick and Nick Jr are available as "channels" in the Boxee Box. Not sure about Disney though...
On the Boxee software, try searching for the title of the shows in the TV Show Library screen...

I would like a boxee box application to stream live TV from a Silicondust HDhomerun. I will pay $1000 for somebody to develop it. I am going to ask Silicondust if they will match that amount for a total of $2000 for a developer to crank it out. I know this is a specific thread on app requests but I may break this out into another thread since its a paid offer. Thanks!
p.s. I know boxee will play the streams but I dont know about boxee box. See this message: http://forums.boxee.tv/showpost.php?p=195298&postcount=8

* we are unable to increase the volume on all Comedy Network and CTV shows....the way the volume bar is set up, you can't turn it up...is it possible to have the volume set up at maximum , so the user can adjust (bring it down if you like) the volume later on...
* The website/links that are bookmarked in the RSS Feeds can not be marked as favorite....it would be great if we have this option...
* The way the boxee software is designed lets you navigate through apps and shows with less clicking...it's nice some that gets incorporated in the boxee box as well, like; the first page of software that allows to have 6 apps/shows shown on the front (which you use the most) is a great idea...
Thank you for listening to us and i have to say that boxee box is a great product!

I would love the usual Spotifies and Last.fms and Groovesharks....
BUT the best app I could think of at the minute would be a simple link to google.
Having to go to apps/browser/faves/google is two clicks and a bit of waiting too much. Even a Faves app that just takes you to your faves would be good.

Doesn't it seem easier to just hit the escape key, then type google.com in the search / browser box?

Could somebody please help me?
I have a Boxee-App idea
for all of the musicians out there!
The ukulele has been making
quite a come-back in the mainstream
with artists such as Eddie Vedder
recently putting out full ukulele albums.
Even Taylor Swift plays the ukulele!
I would like to hire someone
to turn this ukulele website
into a Boxee application!
This whole website is dedicated
to teaching the ukulele to anyone
willing to learn it.... and I think it would
be a fantastic application for all of the musicians out there!
is anyone interested in helping me?
Here is the website:
http://www.ukulelevids.com/
Can something be done with this website?

I created this yahoo pipe which will list the channels on the directory's 1st page, give it a try by adding the following to your boxee feeds
